Prostate Cancer Awareness Month

At Advanced Urology Associates, our board-certified urologists proudly serve the communities of Joliet, Morris, and New Lenox, Illinois with expert, compassionate care. September is Prostate Cancer Awareness Month, a vital time to educate men and their loved ones about the risks, symptoms, and importance of early detection.

Prostate Cancer: Know the Facts

Prostate cancer is one of the most common cancers in men, but when caught early, it is also one of the most treatable. Understanding the warning signs and knowing when to get screened can save lives.

About 1 in 8 men will be diagnosed with prostate cancer during their lifetime. But each man’s risk of prostate cancer can vary, based on his age, race/ethnicity, and other factors.

Common Prostate Cancer Symptoms May Include:

  • Difficulty starting or stopping urination
  • Weak or interrupted urine flow
  • Frequent urination, especially at night
  • Blood in urine or semen
  • Pain in the back, hips, or pelvis
  • Erectile dysfunction

Note: In its early stages, prostate cancer may cause no symptoms at all—making regular screenings critical.

When to Get Screened for Prostate Cancer

The American Urological Association recommends:

  • Men age 50+ at average risk should discuss PSA (prostate-specific antigen) screening with their doctor.
  • Men age 45+ at higher risk—such as African American men or those with a family history of prostate cancer—should start the conversation earlier.
  • Men age 40+ with multiple family members diagnosed before age 65 should be especially proactive.
